A Central Florida retail theft arrest led to the recovery of over $15,000 in stolen goods.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office recovered more than $15,000 in stolen merchandise during a proactive retail theft operation in Brandon near Tampa.
This month, detectives with HCSO’s Organized Retail Theft Unit were conducting an operation at Regency Square Plaza when they observed a woman placing several items into her purse while inside a retail store.
After exiting the store without attempting to pay, she was detained by detectives positioned outside and identified as 46-year-old Stephanie Valdez.
In plain view inside Valdez’s vehicle, detectives observed several bags filled with retail items. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered an estimated $15,000 to $20,000 worth of stolen goods from various retail stores.
According to local law enforcement, Valdez admitted to repeatedly shoplifting since February.
She was taken into custody, facing the charge of Felony Petit Theft. Further charges may be forthcoming according to HCSO.
“Let me be clear, retail theft is a crime, and it will not be ignored,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. “When someone steals thousands of dollars in goods, they are not just targeting a store, they are stealing from our community. We will not allow criminals to treat hardworking people and businesses as easy targets.”
This is an active investigation, according to local law enforcement.
