Florida Democrats are calling for the impeachment of Attorney General James Uthmeier.
In a letter from Florida House Democrats, asked for the Speaker of the Florida House to immediately appoint a committee to investigate the allegations raised in the scandal, and for the Speaker and Senate President to convene a special session of the legislature to consider impeachment of Attorney General James Uthmeier, “and the other individuals implicated in the grand jury report who are now liable to impeachment under Article III, Section 17 of the state constitution.” The Democrats also called for articles of impeachment to be “promptly filed against these individuals and quickly considered.”
The letter was signed by House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell, Leader Pro Tempore Christine Hunschofsky, and Reps. Mike Gottlieb, Kelly Skidmore, Rita Harris, Felicia Robinson, Emily Gregory, Mitch Rosenwald, Yvonne Hinson, RaShon Young, Leonard Spencer, Daryl Campbell, Dotie Joseph, Marie Woodson, and Anna Eskamani.
“We are writing to demand immediate action of accountability following release of the grand jury’s findings involving Hope Florida,” the letter stated. “Ten million taxpayer dollars were funneled away from providing healthcare to children in need and ended up in organizations designed to support the Governor and the Republican Party’s political campaign initiatives.”
The Democrats also understand Republicans control the state politically, so this is very unlikely to happen. But Florida Democrats clearly want to use this as a major election this year and want to try to use it to pressure Republicans.
“As the majority, you hold all the cards,” the Democratic letter concluded. “You have the responsibility and power to prove that no one is above the law, not even state officials. This is your opportunity to show that corruption will not be tolerated.”
