Timothy Ryan Hammock - vehicular homicide suspect

Almost thirteen months to the day, a Lithia man has been arrested for the vehicular homicide of a Plant City woman, Polk County Sheriff’s deputies said.

Timothy Ryan Hammock, 20, was arrested on Wednesday, charged with one count of vehicular homicide, one count of reckless driving causing property damage, three counts of reckless driving causing serious bodily and four counts of driving without a valid license, causing death and injury.

Deputies said, the crash occurred on September 28, 2010, just before 8:00 a.m., when Hammock (later identified) who was driving a Ford SUV on CR 640 near Anderson Road in Mulberry, crossed the center line and into the path of a Ford truck heading eastbound on CR 640.

25-year-old James W. Clark IV, who was driving the truck, was critically injured and taken to a local hospital by EMS.

From the date of the crash last year until October 2011, investigators said, the other parties involved could not tell deputies who was driving the SUV.

Inside the SUV were Jeffrey Surbaugh, Jr., 19, Derreck Wilkerson, 18, and Holly Bowman, 19, all of whom received extensive injuries.

20-year-old Heather M. Layton, who was also in the SUV, died as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

Investigators said, after extensive investigative work, including a trip out of state, it was determined that Timothy R. Hammock was the at-fault driver of the SUV.

Hammock was taken into custody without incident on October 26, 2011 and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail. He is being held without bond and will likely be transported to the Polk CountyJail.
