Save-A-Lot Takes A Bite Out of Hunger

Save-A-Lot, one of the nation’s leading hard discount, limited assortment grocery chains celebrated its continued commitment to supporting hunger relief programs in Orlando with the donation of 10,000 fresh Pink Lady apples to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, as part of the ongoing success of the “Take A Bite Out of Hunger” promotion.

During the months of November through January, Save-A-Lot participated in an apple promotion that allowed the retailers and their consumers to earn a special shipment of fresh apples for local food banks based on retail sales of fresh apples.  The promotion was part of a national campaign sponsored by Washington apple shipper FirstFruits Marketing.

“As a neighborhood grocer, Save-A-Lot is committed to supporting local food banks in their efforts to feed their communities,” said Chon Tomlin, external communications manager, Save-A-Lot food stores. “It is great to be part of a promotion that rewarded our regular purchases to directly benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.”

Offering a selection exclusive and national brands, USDA-inspected quality meats, farm fresh produce, dairy, health and beauty aids, pet food and household products at everyday low prices, Save-A-Lot shoppers enjoy easy savings up to 40 percent when compared to conventional grocery stores– without sacrificing quality.

“Proper nutrition for kids is a challenge in any family.  It becomes particularly difficult if the family cannot afford enough good food regularly.  This donation of fresh, juicy apples is exactly the kind of healthy nutrition that children in Second Harvest Food Bank’s Kids Café program are very unlikely to be getting at home.   We’re thrilled that Save-A-Lot would care enough to partner in this way to help keep our local kids eating right,” said Dave Krepcho, President & CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida serves hot nutritious meals or healthy snacks, free of charge to more than 1,500 children each night after school through participating community programs with the goal of providing a safe, respectful environment where youth can receive wholesome meals and participate in activities like tutoring, homework assistance, nutrition education, sports programs and cultural enrichment.

Throughout the duration of the promotion, FirstFruits Marketing of Washington has partnered with retailers throughout the United States with a goal to donate 1 million apples to food banks around America.
