Over 1,000 Orange County Students Apply to Attend Higher Performing Schools

The final tally is in.  More than 1,000 students in Orange County have applied to transfer out of low performing schools to higher performing public schools in the new school year.

Under the Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP), parents whose children are assigned to a school which has received a “D” or “F” could remain at the same school, transfer to a higher performing school within the district, remain at the zoned school with tutoring or transfer to another school within the state of Florida.

Orange County Public Schools said, 1,032 applications were received for transfers under the OSP. Parents had until July 28 to submit applications.

Evans High and Colonial High Schools topped the list with transfer requests of 272 applications from each. Next was Oakridge High School with 167 transfer requests.  Edgewater High and Jones High School each had 65 and 57 requests, respectively.

About 122 applications were received for tutoring for children who elected to remain in their zoned schools, while another 10 requests came in for transfers to another school outside the district, but within the state of Florida.

A spokesperson for Orange County Public Schools said, the applications are being reviewed and have not yet been approved.
