Paving on the westbound Interstate 4 lanes, in the area known as the Fairbanks curve, is occurring this weekend during the daytime. The Florida Department of Transportation has worked out a schedule with the contractor in an attempt to keep traffic disruptions to a minimum. Here are the details.
· What: Double and single lane closures
· When: Saturday, November 10 and Sunday, November 11
· Timeframe: 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days
· Why: To pave the westbound lanes of I-4 between Lee Road and Fairbanks Avenue
· How: Work initially starts each day with two lanes closed at 5 a.m. By noon each day, only one lane is closed, which leaves three lanes open for traffic. At 5 p.m. — each day — all lanes are open.
Installation of this specific type of paving material is only effective when temperatures are at 65 degrees and rising. The weekend paving option is chosen due to overnight conditions being cooler for the foreseeable future.
The first phase of the project is complete. The second phase involves laying down an asphalt surface, called an overlay, which goes directly on top of the (ground down) concrete surface. There is final restriping and other work that follows. The cost of the project is $377,838. Ranger Construction is the contractor.
According to FDOT, the project is still on time;, but rain or other inclement weather could change the schedule.
FDOT urges everyone to buckle up, be careful in construction zones, and don’t text and drive.
