Gov. Charlie Crist has signed a long-awaited compact between the state and the Seminole Tribe of Florida that allows certain types of gambling on tribal lands including its casinos in Coconut Creek and Hollywood.
Crist negotiated the deal, worth some $6.8 billion over the next 20 years, in 2007. However, in 2008, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that Crist lacked the constitutional authority to enter into such a deal without legislative approval.
“Over the last two months, my administration has, in good faith, negotiated with the Seminole Tribe of Florida a compact that will reap financial benefit to the people of Florida,” Crist said in a news release. “The revenue sharing between the tribe and the state will enable the state of Florida to invest in the future of Florida’s children.”
The 47-page pact still must go before the Florida Legislature for ratification.
