Former Congressman Jefferson Files for Bankruptcy

Former Congressman, William Jefferson, who was found guilty of bribery, depriving citizens of honest services and racketeering, filed for bankruptcy in Louisiana, last Thursday.

Andrea Jefferson, Jefferson’s wife, is also listed on the bankruptcy documents that were filed.

In the documents, Jefferson indicates that he has twenty creditors that are owed, several banks and major credit card companies.

Jefferson’s assets are listed between $1-10 million and estimated liabilities or debts total between $1-10 million, also.

The former Louisiana Congressman was convicted earlier this month.   He had been under investigation since March 2005 and in August of that year, FBI agents found some $90,000 stashed away in Jefferson’s Washington home.  The  cash was found in his freezer, wrapped in foil and hidden in boxes of frozen pie crust.  The FBI agents said that the monies were to be used to pay a bribe.

Jefferson was ordered to pay the government over $400,000, following his conviction.

Sentencing day for Jefferson will be in October and some suggest that he could be jailed for twenty years.
