DP Volleyball rocks Wekiva; Men’s Bowling tops West Orange

Briana Jackson tallied 17 assists, 13 digs and six aces while Kirsten Rego finished with nine digs to lead Women’s Volleyball (4-2) to a three-game sweep of visiting Wekiva, 25-11, 25-15, 25-5, as the Panthers rebounded from a tough match at Lake Highland. In JV Volleyball action, strong serving by Kate Johnson and Sarah Marigomen paved the way to a 25-10, 25-7 victory over Wekiva to even the team’s record at 3-3.  Tuesday will be a critical match for the Panthers as district rival Boone comes into the House of Payne.

Over at Carter Bowl, Men’s Bowling improved to 2-0 with an 855-761 (Baker scoring) victory over host West Orange. Dalton Wainwright (80% marking) and George Johnson (six strikes, 70% marking) took charge for DP.  Women’s Bowling fell to 1-1 on the season after a 743-668 loss to host West Orange, who placed in the top four at the state tournament one year ago.  Sarah Kollas finished with 80% marks and Riley O’Donnell was right there as well with 70%. Both teams will head to Edgewater next Wednesday.

JV Football started off their season in strong fashion with a 16-12 victory over visiting Olympia. Sophomore Jamari Smith’s interception return for a touchdown put DP (1-0) on the board first and quarterback Rich Diedrich ran for a touchdown off a bootleg for the second score.  With Olympia down, 16-12 but driving, sophomore Vernon Walker’s interception in the fourth quarter slammed the door. Freshman football lost 24-0 to Olympia.  Both teams will host Wekiva next Thursday.

Women’s Golf shot a season-low 166, besting their previous mark by 15 strokes, in a 166-150 loss to state power Circle Christian. Sophie Benetti carded a 38, Mao Young was one stroke back at 39, Cristine Lee fired 41 and Abby Goodin came in at 48 for DP (2-1).The Panthers will host Edgewater and East Ridge Monday at Hawk’s Landing.

Dr. Phillips Football, ranked # 1 in Central Florida and # 2 in the state’s Class 8A poll, travels to local # 2 Olympia tonight for a 7:30 kickoff.
