What’s Going Around? Heat Exhaustion

As Central Florida temperatures continue to rise, so does the threat of heat exhaustion.  Over the past week, the number of patients that Centra Care physicians have treated for heat exhaustion has increased over 350% on average.

LEARN MORE:

Heat exhaustion is a result of excessive amounts of water-loss and salt contained in sweat. If not treated promptly, heat exhaustion can progress to a dangerous condition called heat stroke.

The warning signs of heat exhaustion include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Paleness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fainting

The best strategy to avoid heat exhaustion — PREVENTION:

  • Stay hydrated.  Even plan ahead and start drinking water a couple of hours before you begin outdoor activities.
  • Avoid unnecessary heat exposure by avoiding exercise or other outdoor activity in the hottest times of the day.  If you have to be outside, remember to take frequent breaks.
  • Wear light colors & breathable fabrics.
  • Find shade or air conditioning when possible.

Often, a person suffering from heat exhaustion doesn’t recognize the signs, so it’s important to be aware of those you are with.  If you or someone you know shows signs of heat exhaustion, implement cooling measures immediately: 1) Get to a cool or shaded area (air-conditioning is ideal); 2) Rehydrate with water, sport drinks, or a pediatric electrolyte solution like Pedialyte.  Avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol; 3) Remove or loosen clothing; and, 4) Take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath.

If symptoms last for more than an hour or get worse, seek medical attention.

Treat Heat Stroke Immediately – It can be life threatening.

Heat stroke is characterized by disorientation and a body temperature of more than 103 degrees-and rising. Get emergency help immediately if someone you’re with has these symptoms.  Anyone can get heat stroke, including those who are accustomed to being in the heat. Heat stroke is a major medical emergency.
