Walmart to hire 55,000 workers for holiday season

WalmartfinalWalmart plans to hire 55,000 temporary workers at its Walmart U.S. stores during the holiday season, and will move more than 35,000 employees from temporary to part-time status, the company announced Monday.

The world’s largest private employer also announced that, another 35,000 workers will be moved from part-time to full-time status by the end of 2013.

Stores are bracing for a slightly weaker holiday season compared to last year, as consumers remain cautious amidst an anemic economic recovery and continued growth of online shopping.

Overall, U.S. retail holiday hiring will likely match last year’s levels said, Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement consultancy firm. While holiday hiring reached a 12-year high in 2012 with some 751,800 jobs added between October 1 through December, this year’s holiday hiring could still be in the 700,000 range, Challenger said, Reuters reported.
