A man who murdered his girlfriend Saturday night by stabbing her several times, ended up slamming his vehicle into two other cars downtown Orlando as he tried to escape Sheriff’s deputies in a car chase, leaving two white female passengers dead at the scene.   The suspect, Jose A. Maisonet-Maldonado, a Hispanic, along with another driver was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Jose A. Maisonet-Maldonado, suspect

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) and Orlando Police Department (OPD):

Just before 11:00 pm on April 24, 2010 Orange County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a severely injured female in the area of Dean Road and Colonial Drive, near Blanchard Park.  When deputies arrived on the scene they determined the female to be the victim of an attempted murder.  The victim was able to the give deputies details of the suspect, her boyfriend, Jose A. Maisonet-Maldonado, and a vehicle description.

Deputies spotted the vehicle #1, a white BMW SUV, driven by Maisonet-Maldonado, 25, at University and Goldenrod, and shortly thereafter initiated a traffic stop. The suspect’s vehicle did not stop, and deputies pursued for several minutes at normal speeds.

At some point in downtown Orlando, the white BMW SUV (vehicle #1) picked up speed and deputies temporarily lost sight of it.

Vehicle #2, a red 2000 BMW with California license plates, driven by James LeCorte, 39, was stopped for a red traffic light in the right through lane on Westbound Colonial Drive at N. Garland Avenue. Vehicle #3, a 2010 silver Chevrolet, driven by Amy Terry, 50, of Georgia was stopped in the right turn lane directly to the right of vehicle #2.

Maldonado, who was trying to escape deputies, traveling westbound on Colonial Drive, at a rate of over 100 mph, eyewitnesses say, struck the the silver Chevrolet (vehicle #3), then the front of his vehicle impacted the rear of the red BMW (vehicle #2).   The red BMW then traveled through the intersection and into a center concrete barrier until it came to finally rest approximately 200 feet from the area of impact.  Maldonado’s car then struck a Department of Transportation road sign and subsequently struck a concrete bridge pylon before coming to final rest.

Two passengers, Francesca Jeffery, 23 years, (a white female) from Orlando and Amanda Taylor, 28 years, (a white female) from Winter Park, who were in the red BMW (vehicle #2) driven by LeCorte (a black male), died on the spot.

Terry, the driver of the silver Chevrolet (vehicle #3) and her passenger, Kurt Terry, 49, sustained no injuries.

Maldonado and Lecorte were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Maldonado’s girlfriend, Berlitz Alvelo, 35 years, subsequently died from the injuries she sustained from stab wounds.   Maldonado had also run her over with his vehicle, before fleeing.   It has been reported that Maldonado also called Alvelo’s mother bragging that he had killed her.

Maldonado has been charged with first degree murder.   Police officers say that he would also be charged with vehicular homicide for the two woman who died at the scene of the horrific car crash.

There are reports that Maldonado and Alvelo who lived together, had a long history of domestic violence.
