Just in time for the summer, Uber is set to launch its ride-sharing service, UberX in Orlando today. Starting at noon, Orlando riders will be able to request rides through their smart phones from Uber. The service provides a no-cash-payment solution that charges your ride directly to the credit card on file with your account.
UberX offers a safe, convenient and reliable way to get around the city. The goal is for a user to arrive with five minutes at their destination. Uber charges a $2.00 base charge and then $1.50 per mile and $0.15 per minute, according to Local 6.
UberX’s drivers, who are independent contractors, use their own vehicles to transport passengers. This business model has allowed the company to operate without the same licensing requirements and other regulations as other cab drivers.
Over the past few months, the new app based car service has received push back from Mears Transportation, which has said that it should be regulated the same as taxi cabs. And Uber has been resisted by taxi companies and organizations in many cities.
Uber will offer free rides to passengers for the first two weeks, to help promote the service in Orlando.
Orlando joins 40 other cities, including Jacksonville, across the U.S., in which Uber operates.
