Former president Jean-Claude Duvalier, who is believed to have stolen millions from government coffers during his rule, unexpectedly returned to Haiti on Sunday, throwing an already chaotic situation into even greater chaos.
The unexpected arrival of “Baby Doc”, as he is also know, comes at a time when there is great political uncertainty regarding the outcomes of the recent elections and a country still trying to recover and rebuild from the ravages of a major earthquake a little more than one year ago.
As word got around of “Baby Doc’s” return, hundreds of supporters converged at the airport where he returned on Sunday night with a female companion identified as Veronique Roy.
Duvalier, 59, who ruled Haiti with an iron fist from 1971 until overthrown by a popular uprising in 1986, told reporters he came back to help the people of Haiti, although it was not clear what specifically he plans to do.
