Two Career Criminals Arrested Following Central Florida Retail Theft Investigation

Two career criminals were arrested following a Central Florida retail theft investigation.

On July 25th, Home Depot’s Loss Prevention Team on Bloomingdale Avenue, in Riverview near Tampa, notified the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office of a generator theft involving two men in a U-Haul truck.

HCSO’s Organized Retail Theft Squad immediately launched an investigation, identified the suspects, and set a ruse to apprehend them. Just over two hours later, the suspects were taken into custody without incident.

The suspects, 50-year-old Vashon Lewis and 51-year-old Elton Gaffney, are both considered to be COAST (Career Offender Application for Statewide Tracking) Career Offenders.

A COAST Career Offender is an individual who, due to their violent criminal history, is designated by a judge to register their address in the COAST registry maintained by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. These individuals are considered the “worst-of-the-worst” criminals according to FDLE.

Lewis has served six previous stints in state prison. Gaffney has been in state prison four previous times.

“The rapid apprehension of these career criminals underscores the dedication and efficiency of our team,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. “We are committed to protecting our community and ensuring that repeat offenders are brought to justice. The cooperation of local businesses, like Home Depot, is invaluable in our efforts to maintain safety and security in Hillsborough County.”

Detectives are continuing the investigation, as it appears these suspects are responsible for multiple thefts.
