Orlando Science Center, in partnership with the Walmart Foundation, has announced that the next Walmart $5 Day will be Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013.
On that day, guests can enjoy exhibits, giant-screen and 3-D films, and live programs for the significantly discounted price of $5. General admission fees are usually $19 for adults and $13 for youth (ages 3-11). For many, this event presents the opportunity to experience the Science Center for the first time.
Experience the latest travelling exhibit “Sesame Street Presents The Body,” locally presented by Florida Blue with additional support from Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, and two new permanent exhibits “Imagination Playground” and “Jurassic Ridge”; see the newest 3-D film “Penguins 3D;” catch the giant-screen spectacular “Titans of the Ice Age;” or experience four floors of hands-on exhibits and live activities that will engage your family and inspire their curiosity.
In “Sesame Street Presents the Body,” take a walk down one of the most well-known streets in America and find yourself in an engaging, multimedia learning experience that’s all about you! Set in the fun, familiar and reassuring world of Sesame Street, this exhibition is overflowing with an exciting collection of interactive multimedia experiences with a positive kid-friendly message about health and wellness.
Next, sample two of the newest permanent experiences to have debuted at Orlando Science Center. “Imagination Playground” is an innovative play space where lightweight foam pieces of all shapes and sizes foster creativity and design. Children are only limited by their imagination, creating countless settings and scenarios while stimulating deep-learning concepts like critical thinking and problem solving.
Most dinosaur exhibits have a “look-but-don’t-touch” policy, but “Jurassic Ridge” encourages hands-on learning through an immense life-size dig pit. Become an honorary paleontologist and explore this dig site to unearth unique fossils from the Jurassic period. They can use field journals to compare their finds with known research to identify all of the dinosaurs they have uncovered.
After guests have checked out the new experiences, they can sit back and be amazed by some dazzling documentaries. The newly renovated Digital Adventure Theater: A National Geographic Experience boasts stunning 3-D in 4K resolution and 7.1 surround sound. In “Penguins 3D,” the destiny of a very special King Penguin is decided when he returns to his birthplace in the sub-Antarctic. Known as Penguin City, this island is home to hundreds of albatrosses, fur seals and brawling elephant seals — as well as six million penguins!
In the Dr. Phillips CineDome, visitors will be immersed in a giant-screen environment as the domed theater surrounds them with images and sound. In the new film “Titans of the Ice Age,” viewers are transported to the beautiful and otherworldly frozen landscapes of ten thousand years before modern civilization. Dazzling computer-generated imagery brings this mysterious era to life — from saber-toothed cats and giant sloths to the iconic mammoths, giants both feared and hunted by prehistoric humans.
