The Hurston’s New Season Opens With Historical African American Exhibit

The Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts (The Hurston) celebrates its 20th anniversary during its 2009-2010 season. In honor of the 20th anniversary, this year’s theme is The Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts Observes 20 Seasons of Exhibitions.

The season opens with an exhibition entitled “Colored Communities: Post Reconstruction to World War II — Viewing the African American Middle Class through its Own Lens” (September 12-December 31, 2009).  This unique photography exhibit offers a glimpse into an era which, according to historians, marks the country’s most widespread period of racial discrimination, legal segregation and violence. The exhibit will also reflect on the quest for civil rights and the rise of white supremacy.

An opening reception will be held for the opening of the “Colored Communities” exhibit. The reception will be hosted by The Hurston on Saturday, September 12, 2009 and is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Lonnie Graham, the museum’s guest curator for the season will be present as well.
