Seniors First Celebrates New Refrigeration and Freezer Unit in Orlando

Seniors First celebrated the unveiling of its new refrigeration and freezer unit in Orlando, an addition that will significantly enhance the nonprofit’s nutritional programs and strengthen its ability to serve vulnerable senior citizens in the Central Florida community.

To celebrate this milestone, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer on January 30th, bringing together community leaders, supporters and staff to challenge the community to stock the unit.

Seniors First Orlando new refrigerator and freezer unit“Aligning with the food is medicine initiative, this addition truly showcases our commitment to helping seniors live healthier, more independent lives,” said Marsha Lorenz, president and CEO. “With the addition of this refrigeration and freezer unit, we can expand our Meals on Wheels program and continue to grow our collaborations with local partners.”

The refrigerator and freezer unit will allow the organization to provide fresh fruits, vegetables and other perishable food items to supplement its Meals on Wheels program. Since food is a form of medicine for older adults, fresh food will provide essential nutrients to support overall health, prevent chronic diseases, manage existing health conditions and enhance their quality of life.

This addition will allow Seniors First to enhance its Meals on Wheels program that supports more than 900 seniors, delivering more than 345,000 meals in 2024 alone.

Seniors First will continue partnering with local businesses, nonprofits and community leaders to maximize the new unit’s capacity. By working together, the organization’s goal is to reduce food insecurity among older adults and establish stronger social support networks.
