School Board Moves to Vote on Making OCPS Face Masks Optional

The Orange County School Board held a rule development workshop to review proposed revisions and take public comment pertaining to School Board Policy EBBA – Disease Prevention; Face Coverings. The proposed changes to Mask Policy (EBBA) will move forward for a vote after the School Board Rule Development Workshop.

This draft policy makes face masks and coverings optional on OCPS campuses for the 2021-2022 school year. Governor Ron DeSantis and Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran pushed all school districts to update their policies. The revised policy cites the guidance from Education Commissioner Corcoran and Florida’s Surgeon General Scott Rivkees and states the district’s desire to rely upon their guidance for the purposes of the newly enacted Section 768.38 immunity from liability for COVID-19 claims.

Next steps for Orange County will involve the School Board taking a vote at the July 13th School Board meeting, with additional public comment available.

If voted affirmatively on July 13th, the effective date for Policy EBBA will be August 2, 2021.
