Orlando Student’s Solution to Microplastics Recognized in National Competition

An Orlando student’s solution to microplastics was recently recognized in a national competition.

Here’s a shocking statistic: on average, you drink, eat and breathe in anywhere from 74,000 to 121,000 pieces of microplastic every year.

As scientists research the potential health effects, one Orlando Science Schools student is taking action by developing an eco-friendly and cost-effective hydrogel that can remove microplastics from water.

Orlando Science Schools student Sheyna Patel recently earned a spot in the Young Scientist Challenge finals.

In this annual national STEM tournament competition put on by technology company 3M and digital learning platform Discovery Education, middle schoolers are asked to come up with a science-based solution for a common problem.

Sheyna Patel developed an eco-friendly and cost-effective hydrogel that can remove microplastics from water. She is now fleshing out her idea thanks to a mentorship with a 3M scientist.

The contest winner will be announced in October and will receive $25,000.
