Orlando Democratic Mayor Promises to Support Federal Immigration Law

The Orlando Democratic Mayor promised to support federal immigration law and pledged OPD assistance with ICE.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, a Democrat, was pressed by Republicans and Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier on the controversial immigration issue before he quickly buckled and put his support in writing.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer“I want to assure you that we take your letter, Florida law, and federal immigration law very seriously,” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer recently wrote in a letter to the Florida AG. “Neither I nor the Orlando Police Department have any intention of violating federal or state law, and as you know, we have signed the Memorandum of Agreement 287(g) Task Force Model with ICE, an executed copy of which is attached. Our OPD officers are in the process of being trained by ICE to provide assistance at its direction.”

The Florida Attorney General said he appreciated Mayor Buddy Dyer reversing course and confirming that Orlando will enforce state and federal laws. Democrats may have another opinion of Buddy Dyer’s support of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and position on immigration issues.

As the Democratic Party struggles to respond to Republicans on immigration, having a major Central Florida Democrat making this political move only further complicates the issue. “Donald Trump and Florida Republicans have completely betrayed our communities,” Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried said earlier this year about what the FDP called anti-immigration bills. The same laws Mayor Dyer and the City of Orlando promised to support.

“We assure you we will continue to use our best efforts to support the enforcement of federal immigration law, as well as state law,” Mayor Buddy Dyer concluded.
