Orange County Public Schools maintains “A” grade for Third Year

Orange County Public Schools once again received a district grade of A from the Florida Department of Education.  Results from FCAT scores provided to districts and posted on the state website share the ranking along with individual school grades.

Grades in Orange County reveal:

  • A total of 101 schools earned a grade of A during the 2009-2010 school year, including 88 schools that maintained the grade of A.
  • Thirteen additional schools achieved an A this year:

o Cheney Elementary
o Dillard Street Elementary
o Keenes Crossing Elementary
o Lakeville Elementary
o Orlo Vista Elementary
o Riverdale Elementary
o Rolling Hills Elementary
o West Oaks Elementary
o Apopka Middle
o Ocoee Middle
o Wolf Lake Middle
o Liberty Middle
o Lake Nona Middle

  • There are 130 high-performing schools that earned either a grade of A or B.
  • Four schools increased by two letter grades. They are Catalina and Wheatley elementary schools that rose from a grade of D to B; and Rolling Hills Elementary and Liberty Middle schools that rose from a grade of C to A.
  • There are 17 schools that improved by one letter grade.

Orange County Public Schools outperformed statewide trends.  OCPS did not have as large of a drop as the state in the percentage of schools receiving a grade of A or B.  Additionally, OCPS had a decrease in the percentage of schools receiving a grade of D or F while the state had an increase.

Overall, the district showed slight improvement in FCAT reading and math, increasing by one percentage point in each. According to Superintendent Ronald Blocker, “Our students and staff worked extremely hard last year and we continue to show overall improvement.  As we prepare to start another school year, we are clearly focused on our challenges and our strategies.”

While high school FCAT scores are included in the calculation of district grades, the state will not release actual high school grades until this fall.  The state revised the high school grading process that will include expanded criteria to measure high school performance.
