Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando Area has received $1 million from Orange County to buy and renovate up to 12 foreclosed homes for low-income families, as part of its second partnership with the county on the Neighborhood Stabilization Program 3 (NSP 3).

NSP 3, a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) initiative, awarded Orange County $11.5 million to acquire, rehabilitate and sell distressed homes. The funds allocated to Habitat will go toward renovating homes in the Pine Hills area. Habitat will invest about $40,000 into each structure, with improvements such as A/C and appliance installation, roof repair and various fixture replacements.

“We are grateful to Orange County for choosing to partner with us again. Through this program, we’ve been able to not only provide homes to more families, but also instill a renewed sense of pride in the community,” said Dee Danmeyer, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando Area. In 2010, the nonprofit received $600,000 under NSP 1 and purchased seven foreclosed homes. Currently, renovations on five of those homes have been completed.

“We are pleased to partner with Habitat on this important initiative to provide affordable homeownership opportunities in the Pine Hills community,” said Franz Dutes, assistant manager of the Orange County Housing and Community Development Division. “Habitat’s outstanding reputation and proven success make them the ideal partners for this initiative. We continue to be impressed by their organizational capacity and enthusiasm for improving the lives of low-income families in Orange County.”

To date, Habitat Orlando has purchased two homes to renovate through the NSP3 program.
