Work is underway to increase safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists in the eastern Orange County. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is beginning projects at the State Road (SR) 50 bridge over the Econlockhatchee River to meet current and future needs, including building an entirely new bridge.
This week, the Department is installing devices called delineators, which help separate motor vehicle traffic from bicyclists and pedestrians. FDOT has already restriped the lines on the bridge to give more room to those biking or walking.
By fall 2014, the Department expects to hire a construction team to design and build a new bridge over the Econlockhatchee River, replacing the current bridge with a six lane structure. The new bridge will include shoulders and will provide sidewalks separated from traffic by concrete barrier walls. This gives added room to bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists, and increases safety.
The estimated cost of the new bridge is $9.1 million.
