OCPS Changes Emergency Response Terminology

Beginning March 1, Orange County Public Schools will begin sending Connect Orange messages to families using the term SECURE. The new term “SECURE” will replace the term “LOCKOUT” which was previous used for incidents unrelated to the school that involved law enforcement. The term was changed districtwide after the I Love U Guys Foundation updated its terms. OCPS implemented the I Love U Guys Standard Response Protocol in 2015. The picture to the right is the poster that will now be visible in all schools and district buildings.

In the district’s emergency procedures manual there is a standard response protocol for dozens of incidents and details when these terms are used. At any time, throughout the school year parents and students will hear the terms listed on the poster in relation to an incident.
