Obama signs Caribbean-American Heritage Month Proclamation

President Obama recently signed a Proclamation declaring the month of June, National Caribbean-American Heritage Month, while paying tribute to the links between the U.S. and the Caribbean, based on geography, history and common aspirations.

“Throughout our history, immigrants from Caribbean countries have come to our shores seeking better lives and opportunities”, Obama said. “Others were brought against their will in the bonds of slavery. All have shrived to ensure their children could achieve something greater and have preserved the promise of America for future generations.”

Obama referred to the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti earlier this year and which brought untold grief to the Haitian-American community.  He underscored the US’s commitment to remain a steady and reliable partner in helping to rebuild that country.

The President acknowledged the diverse Caribbean American community with its various nationalities and languages and the many who have become leaders in every sector of American life, while maintaining their traditions of their country of origin.

“Caribbean Americans enrich our national character and strengthen the fabric of our culture, and we are proud they are part of the American family,” Obama said.

The President called upon all Americans to celebrate the history and culture of Caribbean Americans in June, with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
