The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office was heartbroken to announce the tragic loss of Deputy Devin Jaramillo, who was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Deputies responded to reports of a deputy who had been shot. The preliminary investigation revealed that Deputy Jaramillo had responded to a traffic crash and became involved in a physical altercation with a subject, during which he was shot and killed.
Deputy Jaramillo was transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to HCA Kendall Hospital, where, despite the tireless efforts of fellow deputies and medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries.
The subject, identified as 21-year-old Steven David Rustrian of Miami, reportedly was able to disarm the deputy and shot him several times with his weapon. Reports said Rustrian got back into his car and fatally shot himself. He was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The shooting occurred at SW 122nd Avenue & SW 128th Street in Miami in South Florida according to law enforcement. A second individual who was originally detained was released and no formal charges were filed at this time.

At just 27 years old, he served our community with professionalism, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others.My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow deputies during this difficult time. Deputy Jaramillo’s legacy of integrity, compassion, and courage will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.”
This is a devastating time for the MDSO family and the entire Miami-Dade community.
“Deputy Devin Jaramillo served with honor, courage, and compassion. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His bravery and service will never be forgotten,” Miami-Dade County stated.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau assumed the investigation.
