WHAT: It’s 46 days into hurricane season, how prepared is your family or business? Mayor Dyer and the City of Orlando are readying for the 2009 Hurricane Season by conducting a Hurricane Table Top Exercise to ensure the City has the ability to prepare for, respond to and recover from disaster situations. During this exercise, Manny Soto, Emergency Management Director, will lead the City’s senior staff in reviewing emergency management systems, policies and procedures to ensure interagency coordination and communication.
Year round, the City of Orlando’s Office of Emergency Management takes proactive steps, working with more than 100 local, volunteer, state, federal and international organizations to ensure Orlando citizens and all of Central Florida is prepared for a hurricane.
“While our community has been fortunate to escape the devastating impacts of hurricanes in the past couple years, we must remember the 2004 season and be ready,” stressed Mayor Dyer. “We must ensure we are ready for anything here at the City, and encourage our residents and businesses to do the same.”
The City also provides volunteer training for those interested in supporting the City during emergency situations. Specifically, volunteers are needed to staff phone lines in the event of hurricane activation of the Orlando Emergency Operations Center. Training sessions begin in August, for more information contact Jasmin Rodriguez at 407-246-3787 or [email protected].
