Make Your Way to Decision Day 2010

Taking steps to ensure career success, education and professional development must be part of your plan.  In this light, Team Career member, Leslee Remsburg, presents the following upcoming event for those in the Greater Orlando area:

Event Spotlight: Decision Day 2010
Where: Seminole State College, formerly known as Seminole Community College, at the Sanford/Lake Mary campus
When: February 26, 2010

It is no doubt each year that when New Year’s resolutions are made, many make a goal to actively pursue a degree in higher education.  Getting college credits under your belt may be easier than you’ve ever anticipated as a resident of the Central Florida community.  There is a growing statewide college system with community colleges such as Seminole State College (SSC) that now offer opportunities to earn associate and bachelor degrees directly on their local campus.

Through a partnership with UCF known as DirectConnect, students at SSC could take advantage of earning a four-year degree at a fraction of what is would cost to attend a full load of undergraduate coursework at a large university.  Through this program, SSC students can start working toward an A.A. or A.S. degree then transfer directly to UCF’s campus to earn their four-year degree.  Or, they may simply transfer in status while continuing to attend class at the Sanford/Lake Mary site that will also earn them a B.A. or B.S.  The second option is available for select major areas of study.

The approximate annual savings of attending a community college versus a four-year university is staggering.  According to statistics found on SSC’s website, it could be more than $9,000 in savings for SSC students who would otherwise step straight onto a larger college campus to pursue a degree.  So, undoubtedly, this is something that is worth considering if you’ve come up with an academic plan including a realistic timeline to achieve it.  While there are endless areas in which to focus your studies, the importance of being timely in choosing a major and sticking with it has a dramatic impact on how long you will be in school and of course, the associated expenses.  There is not only the cost of the course fee, but also books and- if you’re a high school student planning on moving out- room and board.

There are a variety of majors to choose from at SSC and to provide more information on the opportunities offered, the school is hosting Decision Day 2010 at their Sanford/Lake Mary campus on February 26 starting at 8:00 a.m.  High school seniors are strongly encouraged to attend.  If you are a high school senior, the parent of a high school senior who is still undecided with their college plans, or an adult seeking a higher degree, make your way to Decision Day.  There should be more than 20 representatives on-hand to speak with you personally about courses available.

If you are one of the many who has ever made a New Year’s resolution to improve their academic credentials, it is never too late to take that first, active step.  You could start by checking out SSC’s offerings.  If you can’t make it to Decision Day 2010, find out more information about local colleges and universities by getting online or picking up the phone- in this digital age, answers to your nagging questions may be only seconds away.

Thank you Leslee and look forward to meeting many of our readers at the event.
