Jobless Rate in Metro Orlando Drops to 11.4 Percent

The jobless rate in the Orlando metropolitan area (Orange County, Seminole, Osceola and Lake counties) was 11.4 percent in April, down from 12.1 percent recorded in March 2009, but a jump from 9.4 percent in April last year, Workforce Central Florida announced on Friday.

The unemployment rate in Orange County declined to 11.2 percent in April, down by 0.8 percent from 12.0 percent posted the month before, and higher than the 9.4 percent recorded one year ago.

Osceola County recorded the highest jobless rate at 12.3 percent in the metro Orlando area, down from 13.2 percent in March and 2.4 percent higher than one year ago when it stood at 9.9 percent. Seminole County posted an unemployment rate of 10.8 percent in April, down from 11.4 percent the previous month and a jump from 8.8 percent in April last year.

Lake County recorded the second highest jobless rate at 11.9 percent, down from the 12.8 percent posted the month the month before. The unemployment rate was was 9.9 percent in April 2009.

Florida’s jobless rate was 12.0 percent, down from 12.3 percent in March, but a jump from the 9.9 percent posted in April last year.

Nationwide, unemployment rose to 9.9 percent in April, an increase of 0.2 percent from the 9.7 percent recorded in March and 1.0 percent higher than one year ago.
