A spokesperson for WHO Fadela Chaib said that the deadly disease has infected at least 171,000 people.

Currently the illness has a mortality rate of 2.2 percent and while this has markedly improved from the 9.9 percent in late 2010, it would need to drop to less than one percent in order for officials to declare that the outbreak has peaked.  WHO expects that this will not happen for several more weeks.
