Geraldine Thompson Named 2016 Senator of the Year

thompson1State Senator Geraldine Thompson received the Senator of the Year Award from the Tri County League of Cities, comprised of cities in Orange, Seminole and Osceola Counties. The Tri County League of Cities focuses on civic education, economic development and ethics for elected officials. The League works to bring units of local government together to solve local governmental problems. The governmental units exchange ideas and experiences regarding successful methods of local administration.

In recent years, the Florida legislature has passed laws prohibiting local governments from making certain decisions. The legislature has worked to relegate certain decisions exclusively to the state. The restrictions have addressed actions such as fracking, establishing dates for municipal elections, requiring provision of earned sick leave and efforts to end wage theft where employees are required to work off the clock in one municipality will automatically work in another area. She has fought for home rule and to allow local elected officials to make decisions regarding what is best for their residents.

Senator Thompson has been an advocate for local government and home rule. Members of the Tri County League of Cities overwhelmingly selected Senator Geraldine Thompson as Senator of the Year for 2016.

Thompson is currently running against Chief Val Demings, Bob Poe and Fatima Fahmy in a crowded Democratic primary for Florida’s 10th congressional seat.
