The Florida State University Democrats and the Florida Democratic Party responded to the recent FSU mass shooting that left two people dead and multiple people injured.
In an initial response, the Florida State University Democrats described the FSU shooting as a “completely preventable act of senseless violence.”
From the FSU College Democrats‘ statement:
“As authorities continue to release information, College Democrats extends our deepest sympathies to the victims, their families, and every member of the FSU student body, faculty, and the Tallahassee community who has been impacted by today’s senseless tragedy. We share in your feelings of fear, grief, and disbelief.
“FSU College Democrats and UF College Democrats are immensely grateful for all first responders who responded bravely in the face of grave danger. Their heroic actions certainly saved lives today.
“We are relieved to hear that the all-clear has been given. Our thoughts remain with the entire FSU community at this time. Even as we process today’s events, we firmly resolve that no student should ever have to experience fear like this on their campus.
“This is not normal; this is not acceptable.”
Following the mass shooting that left two dead and others injured on the campus of Florida State University, the Florida Democratic Party said it was grateful for first responders and law enforcement, but added “elected officials have failed” victims, survivors and students.
“Our hearts are heavy as we grieve with the victims and families of those who were killed and injured in a mass shooting on Florida State University’s campus today,” said Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried. “We are grateful for the rapid and effective response from first responders and law enforcement who responded quickly to the shooter and conducted a thorough sweep of the campus to secure the scene. Their professionalism and coordination saved lives.”
Florida Democrats called on the legislature to address gun violence and they blamed Republicans for “working for the gun lobby” instead of working for Floridians.
“This is every student’s worst nightmare, every parent’s greatest fear and a day that educators hope will never come,” FDP Chair Nikki Fried added. “To all of the students and teachers traumatized by the violence unleashed on them today, we are with you — and to the students who survived Parkland and currently attend FSU, we are so sorry you had to endure this terror again. Our elected officials have failed you.
“As we await more information on exactly how the shooter accessed his parent’s firearm, it’s not too soon to say that lowering the firearm purchase age to 18 is a dangerous idea with deadly consequences. Any elected officials or lawmakers who would support rolling back that law would be complicit in the continued threat of gun violence on college campuses. It’s time for the Florida Legislature to stop working for the gun lobby and start working for Floridians — and take real steps to make our students safer.”
In memory of the lives lost in this tragedy and to recognize the bravery shown by the first responders, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis directed the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida until sunset on Monday, April 21, 2025.
