Florida Democratic Party Slams AG Moody for Attempt to Block Abortion Amendment

The Florida Democratic Party is slamming Attorney General Ashley Moody after she asked the Florida Supreme Court to block a proposed constitutional amendment that would limit government interference with abortion access.

“The Florida GOP continues to undermine the rights of Floridians to amend their constitution,” said Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried in response to the attempt to block the proposed amendment. “Ashley Moody’s argument is purposefully dishonest and ignores that Florida voters overwhelmingly favor protecting access to reproductive healthcare. Doctors should decide what’s best for their patients — not the government.”

The Republican Florida Attorney General said in her court filing that the abortion initiative “does not satisfy the legal requirements for ballot placement.”

Florida Democrats and progressive organizations have been actively collecting petitions to put abortion access on Florida’s ballot in 2024.

Florida Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book filed a bill to prevent pregnant women, girls, and sexual assault survivors from being criminally charged and imprisoned for obtaining abortion healthcare, following remarks Governor Ron DeSantis made claiming felony penalties in Florida’s abortion ban only criminalize doctors, not patients.

“Abortion rights initiatives have won on every ballot since the fall of Roe v. Wade. Ashley is clearly putting her personal politics ahead of her responsibility to Florida voters, because she knows she has a losing argument,” FDP Chair Fried added. “Making the announcement in an extreme far-right media outlet shows that this is an unserious attempt to seek attention for her future political career.”
