Embraer Opens First Assembly Plant in Melbourne

Embraer, a Brazilian plane maker opened its first assembly plant in Melbourne, Florida on Monday.  Gov. Rick Scott took part Monday in the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The company chose Melbourne International Airport back in 2008 as the site for its future 150,000 square foot assembly facility for two executive jets.

The $50 million plant, the first in the United States for Embraer, is expected to create 200 jobs in the area, which has a heavy aerospace industry presence.

Later on Monday, Scott returned to Tallahassee where he visited the Department of Corrections.

Scott has announced plans to dramatically cut the agency’s staffing – with plans to eventually downsize it by almost 1,700 positions – and to privatize a couple of prisons.
