“Dr. Beach” recently announced the list of the top 2010 beaches in the U.S. and two of Florida’s beaches are in. The Florida beaches making the 2010 cut are: Siesta Beach in Sarasota in second place and Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne in tenth position.
Stephen Leatherman, know as “Dr. Beach” uses fifty criteria to evaluate beaches, including water and sand quality, as well as safety and environmental management.
Leatherman’s best beach for 2010 is Coopers Beach located on the south shore of Long Island, New York. Main Beach in East Hampton, New York is also on the list in fifth position.
Other beaches making it into the top 10 this year include: Coronado Beach in San Diego, California; Cape Hatteras in the Outer Banks of North Carolina; Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii and Coast Guard Beach in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
In 2008, Florida’s Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin/Clearwater was in the top spot and Fort DeSoto park, North Beach, St. Petersburg was named by Leatherman as the top beach in 2005.
Leatherman, director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research, is an internationally known coastal scientist who has been putting the list of top beaches together for the past 19 years.
Nice to see the Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Bansk of North Carolina continue to be represented on the top ten list.
