Jakob Probst scored the game-winning run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the DP Baseball team a close 1-0 victory over DeLand in their season opener. DP (1-0) had opportunities to score in six of their seven innings but not until the seventh did they get the break they needed. With one out, Ronnie Mitchell was hit by a pitch and Probst came in to pinch run for him at first base. Probst then stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Josh Jimenez. After Nic Strasser was walked intentionally, Nolan Lang stepped into the box with runners at the corners but he didn’t get a pitch to hit because the first one skipped into the dirt and away from the catcher, allowing Probst to score the game-winning run. Senior Mike Flaherty had a superb outing on the mound, scattering two hits, not allowing a run while fanning three through five innings and sophomore picked up the victory in spectacular fashion. DeLand threatened in the sixth with runners at first and second but Marman pitched his way out of the jam, striking out the final two batters in the inning. In the seventh, Marman fanned two of three batters, both looking, to pick up his first win of the season.
