District Court Decision Upholds Voting Right Laws, Blocks Trump Order

A D.C. District Court’s decision upholds voting right laws and blocks President Trump’s executive order demanding proof-of-citizenship on voter registration forms.

A federal judge called President Donald Trump’s order requiring documented proof of U.S. citizenship on federal voter registration forms unconstitutional and blocked it.

Democrats celebrated the court ruling.

“The D.C. District Court ruling is a major victory for our democracy. Democrats took Trump to court to protect fundamental voting rights and we won,” said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. “This judgement makes clear that the Trump administration’s executive order to disenfranchise voters by limiting access to the ballot box is unconstitutional. Democrats will keep fighting to do all we can to make sure the ability to choose our elected officials remains with the people and elected officials don’t get to choose their voters.”

In a joint statement, plaintiffs and counsel, who are a coalition of voting and civil rights organizations, said:

“The court’s ruling confirms what we have long argued: the President may not rewrite election law to impose a burdensome show-your-papers rule that would shut out countless Americans from the ballot box. This executive order was an attempted overreach of power, bypassing the Constitution’s clear allocation of authority to Congress and the states to set election rules. Our democracy is strongest when every eligible voter can register and vote free from expensive and unnecessary requirements.”
