Senator Ashley Moody Calls on Senate Democrats to Reopen Government

Florida Senator Ashley Moody called on Senate Democrats to pass the bipartisan clean continuing resolution and reopen the government.

Calling it “the Schumer Shutdown,” Republican Senator Ashley Moody delivered remarks on the Senate Floor calling on Democrats to act in the interest of all Americans, not just a radical subsection of the Democratic base, to restore funding to core government functions and ensure our troops, law enforcement officers, and other essential federal workers receive their paychecks.

“We are trying to end this shutdown, yet we are blocked at every point,” the Florida Senator said. “Along with a few, very few, courageous Democrats, we’ve voted for a bipartisan continuing resolution to fund the government. The opposing Democrats do so while knowing they are voting against paying our troops for our security, against paying law enforcement for safety, and against paying so many other people that are necessary that are necessary for critical functions. They vote no.”

Senator Moody pointed out she has voted over and over to reopen the government as the majority of Senate Democrats refuse to end the shutdown as they continue pushing their political battle over healthcare.

She noted that Republicans have voted to eliminate future shutdowns and to pay military, law enforcement and essential government workers, but the same Senate Democrats block the efforts. As the newest U.S. Senator from Florida, she was “disgusted” in the political tactics of Democratic Senators during the shutdown battle.

“I implore my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to remember the effects of this shutdown go well past the boundaries of D.C.” the Republican Senator continued. “In my home state of Florida, we’re seeing crisis centers which serve veterans, law enforcement officers, first responders, some of our most vulnerable that encounter hardships all because colleagues have refused to open the government.”

“The choice is simple for my colleagues at this point,” Senator Ashley Moody said. “Either you stand for this country, for our service members and for actually governing this nation, or you stand against that.”

Senator Moody also announced at the start of the “Schumer Shutdown” that she will be donating her taxpayer-funded salary for every day there is a lapse in funding.

She will be donating her salary to the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay in Central Florida.

The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay provides:

  • Sexual assault services: Providing forensic exams and victim advocacy services for sexual assault survivors;
  • Trauma counseling for children and adults;
  • The Florida Veterans Support Line;
  • The First Responder Hope Line;
  • Crisis Center staff who field emotional support calls at 911 law enforcement dispatch; and
    Medical transportation 911 ambulance service.
