Democrats Demand Congress Investigate Pattern of ‘Anti-Democratic Abuses’ in Florida

Orlando Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost, Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, and New York Congressman Dan Goldman, all Democrats, sent a letter calling for an Oversight Committee hearing following Governor Ron DeSantis’ “unjust and unconstitutional suspension of Florida’s only democratically elected Black female State Attorney, Monique Worrell.”

In their letter, the Members call on Republican Chairman Comer to heed their repeated calls for a Committee hearing to fully examine what they call “the anti-democratic abuses of power happening across Florida at the hands of the Governor and his GOP-controlled legislature.”

The move, which marks Governor DeSantis’s second suspension of a Democratic state attorney, comes after Congressman Frost hosted an emergency ad-hoc hearing back in June where Members heard directly from witnesses, including Orlando State Representative Anna Eskamani, former State Attorney Andrew Warren and former Duval County substitute teacher Brian Covey – who all depicted a picture of state leadership hungry for power and entrenched in modern day fascism and authoritarianism.

In their letter, the Members write: “Under its current administration, Florida’s executive and legislative branches of government have engaged in a relentless assault on the fundamental rights and freedoms of Floridians…Given the seriousness of the current attack on democracy and freedom in Florida and other states, the urgent need for Congressional action has become more dire than ever. A full Committee hearing is essential to understand the pattern of these abuses of power and to identify the steps that must be taken to protect the rights and freedoms of Floridians and Americans living in other states witnessing similar attacks.”

  2. gov.. DeSantis has fired 23 elected officials from office! That is 23 individuals the voters of Florida elected! This governor has engaged on a pattern of egregious abuse of his power, in most cases out of purely partisan political desire to enhance his own candidacy for presidential nomination, at the expense of 22 million Florida residents! I am one of those whose vote was nullified in Hillsborough County, and as such I have standing to seek damages for this harm committed by the governor! This is but one of dozens of violations of our constitutional rights and federal law! He must be held accountable.

  3. DeSantis needs to be removed from office immediately, he continues to do damage to all Floridians. There needs to be a stop to it because he has gotten out of control since he became 2nd term Governor as well as running for President of Florida.

  4. He’s an elected official and reelected in a landslide. You know he’s calling Worrell out on her partiality in sentencing. Look at the evidence.
