Crist Pushes for Back-to-School Tax Holiday

Governor Charlie Crist is considering a back-to-school tax holiday, as he believes that this would help reduce the tax burden on Florida families and as well, stimulate business activity.

“We need to reduce the tax burden on the backs of Florida families and give them this tax holiday back again, so they have the opportunity, when they’re sending their children back to school, to number one, get those items without additional taxes placed on them, and number two, stimulate those businesses,” Crist said, according to cfnews13.

It is not clear yet what items would be tax exempt, but the thinking is that the back-to-school holiday leads to additional spending which would help spur sales in the sluggish Florida retail sector.

The state of Florida last signed off on a sales tax holiday two years ago, when a 10-day state and local sales tax break was implemented.

The back-to-school tax holiday being proposed would likely be from August 13 to August 22.

The measure would have to be debated and passed by the Florida legislature.
