Attorney General Pam Bondi has filed a lawsuit against BP and Halliburton for more than $5.4 billion for revenue Florida lost in the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill three years ago.
Bondi, at a news conference Tuesday said, the figure takes into account damage to both the economy and the environment.
“We presented BP with a claim which includes current, past and future damages,” Bondi said.
“A tremendous amount of damage was incurred when millions of gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf and BP must be required to compensate the state for our losses,” she said.
Bondi also noted that the state had complied with federal law and made a presentment, but did not even receive a reply from BP.
Bondi said that, while Florida is still ready and willing to work out a settlement with BP, “we are more than ready to litigate this case.”
