Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz will host the 6th Annual City of Orlando Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff on Thursday, September 13 to celebrate the influence of Hispanic culture in Orlando.
This free event celebrates the commencement of Hispanic Heritage month which runs from September 15 to October 15, 2012. It honors the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of the Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The starting date coincides with the Independence Commemoration of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
The kickoff will feature food from local Hispanic vendors as well as a colorful showcase of Hispanic art and performances.
The City of Orlando recognizes the important role our Hispanic community plays in our society and continues to reach out to our growing and vibrant Hispanic residents through the creation of two municipal offices: the Multicultural Affairs Office, created this year to generate community partnerships, build strong communications bonds and provide a point of contact to multicultural community organizations and residents towards enhance the quality of life of constituents; and the Hispanic Office for Local Assistance (HOLA), which was open in 2006 to connect the residents, families, businesses and newcomers to Orlando with its City departments, government agencies, community-based and professional organizations, with the information, resources and tools related to housing, healthcare services, educational opportunities and many other resources.
