Former Teacher Charged with having Sex with Student

A former high school teacher, who deputies say, sent over 12,000 text messages to a 16-year-old student and had sex with him, was arrested Wednesday.

Stephanie Cobb - suspect

Volusia County Sheriff’s investigators charged 26-year-old Stephanie Cobb, a former English teacher at University High School, with one count of unlawful sexual activity with a 16-year-old boy at the high school in Orange City.

Detectives began the investigation last December, when an unidentified woman called 911 to report that a friend was sending her suicidal text messages. The woman gave investigators the boy’s name, address and phone number, but didn’t identify herself.

Investigators were able to trace that the call had come from Cobb’s phone.

The unidentified boy was tracked down at University High School. Investigators found Cobb’s phone number in his cell phone contacts listed under, “My Precious Angel.”

The teen told investigators that the two had engaged in a consensual relation that led to sex on one occasion while in Cobb’s car at a park in Deltona. A few of the boy’s friends confirmed that the teen had confided in them about the relationship.

Investigators say, Cobb and the boy had exchanged more than 12,000 text messages and talked on the phone 500 times during a 4-month period beginning in August.

Cobb, who declined to be interviewed by investigators was pulled over by investigators yesterday afternoon, as she drove away from her home on Alexandra Woods Drive in Debary.  She was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach and booked on $25,000 bond.

Cobb has since bonded out of jail.
