Driver’s Vehicle Overturns in Pond after Hot Pursuit by Trooper

A man who crazily believed he could outrun a trooper, sustained serious injuries after overturning in a retention pond on Alafaya Trail and State Road 408 on Thursday.

Just before 3:00 a.m., a FHP trooper clocked 28-year-old James Maddux, of Longwood, speeding in a construction zone with workers present. He was traveling eastbound on State Road 408, near Goldenrod Road.

Maddux initially stopped, but as the trooper approached, sped away in the 1999 Honda he was driving.

The trooper pursued Maddux, but as he attempted to exit near Alafaya Trail, lost control while traveling through the intersection and overturned in a retention pond.

Maddux was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment.

A passenger in the vehicle, 17-year-old Raul Cantoral, was able to exit the vehicle and sustained only minor injuries.

Maddux was arrested at ORMC. He has been charged with DUI, fleeing and alluding and felony suspension of his driver’s license.

FHP said, once released, Maddux will be transported to the Orange County Jail.
