Lake, Sumter County At-Risk Students Receive Scholarships

Take Stock in Children of Lake and Sumter Counties has been selected as the proceeds recipient from The Kiwanis Club of Clermont’s Annual Oakley Seaver Golf Tournament.

This is the fifth year Take Stock in Children has been selected to receive the proceeds from the event. Several businesses and individuals formed teams from throughout Central Florida to compete at Legends Golf Course in Clermont on Oct. 7. This Kiwanis fundraising event has fulfilled the wish of the late Oakley Seaver to provide four year scholarships to deserving, at-risk students, complete with mentor activities and parent participation.

“The award of $21,000 will be used to provide a 2+2 Florida Pre-Paid Scholarship to three students who attend a public school in the South Lake County area,” said Carman Cullen, Executive Director of the Educational Foundation of Lake County.

Take Stock in Children, a program of the educational foundation, identifies financially at-risk students in the eighth grade, provides them with a mentor and an advocate and then rewards them at high school graduation with a college tuition scholarship.

Take Stock in Children staffing is funded by the state, and the program operates in all 67 counties in Florida. Local money raised for scholarships is matched through the project STARS program, thus doubling the impact on the community.
