Thousands of Haitians took to the streets on Sunday night to protest the outcomes of the presidential elections in that country, joining the calls from 12 presidential candidates to declare the polls null and void.
While many hoped for free and fair elections, it was no surprise that within hours of the polls’ opening, there was chaos and allegations of fraud and vote tampering, with many Haitians claiming that they had been disenfranchised.
Mirlande Manigat, the apparent front runner, along with the other presidential contenders asked the Provisional Electoral Council to squash the poll due to the numerous irregularities.
Meanwhile, some observers suggest that, with Haiti still suffering from the effects of a massive earthquake in January, a deadly cholera outbreak, and general elections marred by many incidents, the country could be on the verge of political upheaval.
