As the howls over the use of TSA full-body scanners and intrusive pat downs at many of the nation’s airports continue, one airport in Central Florida is planning on dropping TSA agents to screen passengers. The way has been cleared for Orlando-Sanford International Airport to use a private security firm instead of TSA employees.
Larry Dale, the CEO of the Sandford Airport Authority told WDBO radio that his board has given him authorization to pursue private screening companies, one of which will take over from the TSA.
However, even if airports opt to use private screening companies, the screeners will be bound by TSA-mandated security procedures and guidelines.
Meanwhile, Republican John Mica of Central Florida, expected to head the powerful House Transportation and Infrastructure committee in the new Congress, wrote to about 150 of the busiest airports across the country recommending that airports request private screening companies, as Federal law allows screeners from the private sector to be used instead.
Mica believes that the TSA has gone too far and is in need of reform.
