A pedestrian safety improvement project is currently underway along South Rio Grande Avenue, with Public Works crews working between Holden Avenue and Gore Street.
The scope of the S. Rio Grande Avenue project includes midblock crossings with enhanced raised refuge islands for pedestrians and rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons.The outside travel lanes northbound and southbound will be repurposed to provide a 7-foot-wide bike lane with a 4-foot buffer between I-4 and Gore Street.
Various intersections along S. Rio Grande Avenue in Orlando will be modified to accommodate trucks while minimizing pedestrian crossing distances and slowing vehicle turning speeds. Sidewalks and curb ramps will be retrofitted to improve pedestrian and bicyclist access while meeting American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
According to Orange County, funding for these improvements will come from the Accelerated Transportation Safety Program, which addresses transportation projects using existing revenue sources and will strive to meet the unique needs of each commission district.
Upon completion of these projects, S. Rio Grande Avenue will be resurfaced from 33rd Street to Gore Street with new pavement markings from Holden Avenue to the Jones High School entrance. The median islands throughout the corridor will also be painted.
Pending weather and other factors, the project should be complete by the end of October 2024, according to Orange County officials.
