At the invitation of Orange County Sheriff, Jerry Demings, hundreds of community residents, deputies and their families turned out to celebrate African American Heritage today at the OCSO Headquarters on West Colonial Drive.
The crowd was exposed to lots of art and culture with outstanding performances by the Orlando School of Cultural Dance and Tawana and Kim of St. Marks Methodist Church in Orlando.
African American and Caribbean food was plentiful, including black-eyed peas, boiled string beans and ham, collard greens and ham hocks; corn bread, barbecue chicken and more.
“It took lot of careful planning and hard work by the Organizing Committee,” Jeff Williamson, OCSO Media Specialist/Public Information Officer, said. “There wasn’t really a budget for these festivities, so we had to be creative and most of it came from donations and OCSO families contributing time and resources for today’s function.”
Everyone had a great time with entertainment provided throughout the two-hour celebration by DJ, Cliff Flowers.
Saxophonist, Jerry Jones, Jr., complemented the festivities by playing several renditions of his own.
